Is Tik-Tok the new way to hire?

In a world where the next big thing is just a thumb-scroll away, it’s no surprise that TikTok, the app that’s brought us viral dances and lip-syncing sensations, is making waves in the job market. But wait, could your next paycheck really come from a TikTok video? Let’s take a closer look at whether TikTok is the newest hotspot for job seekers and employers alike.

1. Creative Job Posts That Pop!

Forget the snooze-worthy text-heavy job listings. Companies are leveling up their game by using snazzy TikTok videos to showcase their workplace and the roles they’re hiring for. Think office tours, team shoutouts, and the occasional quirky dance-off. Yep, you heard that right!

2. Peek Behind the Office Curtain!

Ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at your dream company? Well, TikTok’s got you covered. These bite-sized videos peel back the curtain to reveal a company’s culture, quirks, and camaraderie. Think of it as a sneak peek before you decide to swipe right on that application!

3. Challenges & Competitions = Job Opportunities!

Some companies are getting creative by hosting TikTok challenges and competitions related to their job openings. You might find yourself showing off your skills or creativity for a chance to land your dream gig. It’s like American Idol but for jobs!

*As shared by J.T. O’ Donnel in her blog “2 Reasons Why TikTok Will Be One Of The Hottest Ways To Hire (And, Get Hired!) In 2023”

1. TikTok’s Search Algorithm Upgrade

Big news on the TikTok front! The app has amped up its search game, and it’s poised to revolutionize the way job seekers and employers connect in 2023.

So, what’s the scoop? TikTok’s search functionality now resembles Google’s search capabilities. You can input phrases or strings of words (known as long-tail keywords for the SEO enthusiasts), and voila! The platform serves up the most relevant content right before your eyes.

Now, here’s the game-changer for employers: Companies on the lookout for fresh talent can now dominate search results by optimizing their content with keywords related to their business. No more sifting through endless job boards – it’s all about direct hits.

2. Second, the economic downturn is going to dramatically decrease job postings online. The Pros:
  • Wide Reach:With over a billion users worldwide, TikTok can help companies cast a wide net to snag that perfect catch (employee).
  • Engagement:Short, sweet, and visually captivating videos capture the attention of even the most passive job seekers.
  • Authenticity:Get ready to meet the real face behind the company logo. TikTok’s casual vibe lets companies showcase their true selves.
The Cons and Challenges:
  • Not for Everyone: TikTok isn’t the go-to spot for every job seeker. Some industries might find it less relevant.
  • Quality Matters:Crafting compelling TikTok content isn’t as easy as it looks. It takes time, creativity, and maybe even a pinch of magic dust.
  • Competition is Fierce: As more companies hop on the TikTok train, the platform could become jam-packed with job postings. Standing out might require a bit of razzle-dazzle.

Show potential candidates that you’re invested in their future. Highlight your training and development programs, both formal and informal. Make it clear that joining your company means more than just a job; it’s a journey.

The Verdict:

So, is TikTok the future of recruitment? While it’s certainly a shiny new tool in the recruiter’s kit, it’s not about to dethrone LinkedIn just yet. TikTok adds a splash of pizzazz to the job hunt, especially for roles that fit the platform’s vibe. But remember, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. So, don’t toss your resume in the virtual trash just yet.

For now, let’s say TikTok is the cool new club where job opportunities can be as funky as the latest dance challenge. Stay tuned to see if this trend has legs (or should we say, feet?).

  • First, TikTok changed their search algorithm.

Users of TikTok can now search like they do on Google, using a phrase of string of words (also called long-tail keywords for the SEO savvy), as a way to find relevant answers on the platform. This means that companies who are looking for new talent have an opportunity to DOMINATE for the search terms related to their company so job seekers can skip the job boards and find them directly.

Why should employers bother?

Studies show 40% of Gen Z are now using TikTok to search for information. That’s based on Google’s own data. In short, TikTok is where the talent is, and the employers that invest in using TikTok will attract more of the right candidates.

  • Second, the economic downturn is going to dramatically decrease job postings online.

The days of “two jobs for every person” are gone. Yes, there are a lot of open jobs – that nobody wants. But, when it comes to the good jobs that so many purpose-driven professionals are focused on getting right now, competition is fierce. And, about to get a lot worse.

Based on my 20 years in the staffing and recruiting industry, and having lived through three previous economic downturns, I predict the one we are experiencing right now is going to last through a good part of 2023.

Layoffs are up and will continue, as many companies restructure post-pandemic to get themselves in a position to last the downturn. This is when job boards see a large decrease in companies posting open positions on their sites. It’s not just that there are fewer jobs, it’s that companies don’t want to deal with thousands of applicants for a single position. Instead, they post them on their own career pages and rely on referrals and people who actively want to work for them to find them and apply directly.
